Thank you to the families, friends, and colleagues who joined us yesterday to celebrate the publishing of our second graders’ narrative writing. Our second graders spent nine weeks apprenticing themselves to mentor authors. First, they carefully studied Jane Yolen’s Owl Moon, mining it for powerful moments. At each powerful moment, they asked, “What is powerful? Why is it powerful? How did she do it?” and then tried it on in their own writing.
Eventually, students chose their own mentors, turning to authors like Ezra Jack Keats, Cynthia Rylant, Donald Crews, and Angela Johnson to figure out how they make their writing powerful before trying it in their own writing.
Working with their writing partner, they constantly set goals and assessed their progress toward their goals throughout the unit. Toward the end, they worked with the same partner to edit their writing, readying it for publication.
Thank you for celebrating this work with us. Special thanks to Hala and Teresa for bringing in treats to share. If you were unable to make it, we will be sure to share your author’s writing with you during conferences next week on November 11 and 12.
